Southampton is a beautiful coastal city which has a number of interesting and fun activities that you can do, if you just know what to look for.
Walk The Walls
Southampton itself is an old city, because of this there are a lot of old buildings and ruins which can be explored at your leisure. One such completely free activity is the Southampton Old Town Walk, where you can traverse the old walls which used to surround the city. In doing so, you get to see over 90 listed buildings and 30 ancient monuments. (Source)
If you want a more official tour, you can contact the Southampton Tourist Guides Association and organize a Blue Badge guided walk, where a tour guide will tell you about the history behind the walls, buildings and monuments.
These guides are available every Saturday and Sunday year around, starting at Bargate at 11am for just £3 per person.
For a fairly unusual but fun afternoon out, organise yourself a Southampton’s Go Ape trip! Go Ape is described as a tree-top experience, where you can spend 2-3 hours traversing the forests outside of Southampton.
If you think you might enjoy something that involves zip wires, tarzan swings, rope ladders and a variety of obstacles set up all throughout the trees, then you’ll definitely want to check this out. It does cost £33 per person, but it means you can spend a unique couple of hours swinging and climbing between the trees.
This incredible place is located at Itchen Valley County Park. A beautiful park with the River Itchen running through its heart, it’s an ideal place to go if you want to do something fun but unusual one weekend.
If you’re a fan of paintball, or just want to give it a try, Southampton has an amazing and large paintball area which you can go to. This is a full day event that can really make a weekend, especially as spring starts to pull in!
For £7.49 per person, you are able to play 12-14 games. Not only that, but you also get equipment hire, 100 paintballs and a light lunch with your booking.
It’s a fairly cheap yet incredibly fun activity that you and your other university friends and colleagues can take a Saturday to do together. Nothing builds great friendships like trying to shoot someone repeatedly!
Isle of Wight
Southampton itself is located right beside the Isle of Wight, which is incredibly convenient if you want to have an interesting trip somewhere without paying the costs of flights or fussing too much about bookings.
The Red Funnel Ferry service pulls directly into the Southampton docks, which are in easy walking distance from the town centre. It does cost about £22 per person, but in exchange you get to go to a beautiful island filled with museums, galleries, beaches and shopping. And that’s’ if you just want to visit for the usual holiday events.
If you wanted to go for a more active trip, be it a daytrip or a weekend, there is also a number of other activities available:
- Walking through 500 miles of footpaths and established walking routes
- Cycling along the same beautiful areas
- Horse-Riding over 165 miles of bridleways
- Golf courses, of which there are a number to choose from
- Sailing, from sight-seeing tours to sailing tuition and/or more hands on sailing experiences
- Fishing, both sea and freshwater areas accessibly, as well as charter boats available.
