The beast from the east might have reared its head again this week, but that hasn’t stopped the daffodils from sprouting, the days from getting longer, and the birds from singing in the trees! After what feels like the longest winter ever, spring is finally on its way so it’s time to start thinking about what amazing things you’ll be getting up to in the spring sunshine this year.
And if you’re a student in Southampton there are plenty of budget friendly things you do that will get you out and about over the coming months.
- Have a spring picnic
Southampton is home to over 50 parks and green spaces, so you would be mad not to make use of them! Pack a spring picnic and head to one of the Grade II listed parks in the city centre to get some fresh air, feel the sunshine on your face and see the flowers beginning to come up in the Victorian flowerbeds.
- Swing in the trees
Now that it’s not raining all day every day it’s the perfect time to go and fulfil your dreams of swinging through the trees like a monkey! Head on down to Go Ape in the West End to soar through the air on zip wires, Tarzan swings, and rope bridges.
- Practice photography
Taking photos is a great reason to get out of the house and explore, especially as all you need is your phone! Set yourself a challenge of documenting the change in season and head to Itchen Valley Country Park to get the perfect nature shot.
- Boat watching
Southampton is famous for the spectacular views across its busy waterfront, so take a flask of coffee and head down to the port to watch the cruise ships coming and going.
- Go cycling
If you’ve got a bike but you’re bored of the same old routes, head over to Southampton Bike Park to check out the awesome trails – all for free!
- Hit the slopes
If the weather is too horrendous for outside activities, grab your winter gear and head over to the Alpine Snowsports Centre to practice your skiing and snowboarding skills.
- Get cultured
A great activity for a rainy day is to visit the internationally renowned Southampton City Art Gallery where you can see high quality exhibitions of twentieth century and contemporary British art ranging from photography to painting and sculpture.
